How a Custom Engagement Ring Is Made: From First Idea to Finished Ring
Share

A custom engagement ring is one of the most personal pieces of jewelry you'll ever own. But if you've never had one made, the process can feel like a mystery. How does an idea turn into a finished ring? How long does it take? Do you need to know exactly what you want before you start?
Here's how the custom design process works at Dinkins & Family Fine Jewelry Co., from the first conversation to the day your ring is ready.
Step 1: Your consultation, in person or virtual
Every custom piece starts with a conversation. Our design specialists are available in any way that works for you. You can schedule an in-store consultation with us, or book a virtual consultation from home, whichever is easier for you. Walk-ins are also welcome.
This is where you tell us, or show us, what you have in mind. Bring photos, screenshots, or just a feeling for the style you love. You don't need a finished idea; helping you shape one is a big part of what we do.
If you visit in person, you can try on prototype designs to get a real sense of shapes, proportions, and how different styles look on your hand.
Step 2: Choosing your diamond
You can start with the diamond in whatever way works for you:
- Use a diamond you already own, such as a family heirloom or a stone from an earlier piece, and we'll design around it.
- Choose from our in-store diamonds, which you can see in person. Lab grown and natural diamonds are available.
- Explore our diamond vault, which gives you access to an even wider selection of stones to fit your size, shape, quality, and budget.
Step 3: Seeing your design in 3D
Most of our in-store prototype designs are completely customizable, including stone shape and size, metal material and metal color, etc. However, there are endless options for every idea - If a new design is needed, we will create a custom digital CAD design of your ring. This detailed 3D model shows exactly how your ring will look before anything is made, and it's usually ready within a few days.
Reviewing the CAD design lets you see the setting, band, and details from every angle and make changes before production begins.

Step 4: Approving your design and quote
Once you're happy with the design, we'll give you a quote. After you approve both, your ring moves into production.
Step 5: Optional resin sample
Want to see and hold your ring before it's made in metal? You can request a resin sample, a physical model of your design. It's a great way to check the size, profile, and feel on your finger before casting.

Step 6: Casting and finishing
Your approved design is then cast, stones are set, ring is polished, checked and completed by our on-site jeweler to ensure quality.

How long does a custom ring take?
Because we have an on site master jeweler, your ring is designed and completed right here in our store. Our standard time frame for custom jewelry is 4 to 6 weeks from design approval to completion. Simpler designs can often be finished sooner. If you have a proposal date or event in mind, let us know at your consultation so we can plan around it.
Step 7: Your ring is ready, with a free appraisal
When your ring is complete, we'll contact you to let you know it's ready. Every custom piece comes with a free jewelry appraisal. You'll need an appraisal to insure your ring, and you can choose any jewelry insurance provider you like, such as BriteCo.
